Samira Saberi is an ICF PCC-certified leadership coach who passed the PCC Credential Exam on her first attempt in 2024. With 15+ years of business experience, a Bachelor of Science and a Leadership Principles Certificate from Harvard Business School.
Why simulation is different from study
The ICF Credentialing Exam is scenario-based rather than recall-based, and this changes what preparation should look like. Knowing the competencies is necessary and does not predict performance, because every option presented in a question is drawn from the competency framework and several will look defensible.
What the exam actually tests is discrimination between plausible options under time pressure. That is a skill developed by doing it repeatedly, not by rereading the material.
The reasoning that separates the answers
A recurring pattern in exam scenarios: several options are things a competent coach might do, and one is what a coach should do next, given where the client is in the conversation.
The discriminating question is usually about sequence and about who holds the agenda. An option that moves toward a solution before the client's own goal is established is wrong even if the solution is sensible. An option that reflects back what the client said is right at one point in a session and evasive at another. Working through enough scenarios to internalise that logic is the point of simulation.
Format
Sessions run under timed conditions with scenarios written to the structure of the real exam, followed by review of the reasoning rather than only the answers. The review is where the value sits: getting a question right for the wrong reason predicts failure on the next variant of it.
Available individually or in small groups, in English and Farsi. For Farsi-speaking candidates, practising the reasoning in one language and answering in another is a specific skill worth rehearsing before the exam rather than discovering during it.
How this fits with the rest of the credential
The written exam is one component. The recorded performance evaluation is the part more candidates fail, and it tests whether you demonstrate the competencies in a live session rather than whether you can identify them.
