Authority without hierarchy

Creative organizations tend to run flat, and flat structures do not remove authority so much as make it informal. Influence attaches to whoever has the strongest track record, the loudest conviction, or the longest tenure, and none of those are visible on an organizational chart.

Leaders in this environment frequently find that the formal title they were given does not carry the weight they expected. The work is learning to operate through credibility rather than position, which is a genuinely different skill and one that formal management training rarely addresses.

Managing people whose work is subjective

The hardest management problem in creative work is that quality is contestable. Feedback on a spreadsheet can point at an error; feedback on a concept is one informed opinion meeting another, and both parties know it.

What separates leaders who handle this from those who do not is being explicit about which kind of feedback they are giving. “This does not meet the brief” is a factual claim and can be settled. “I would have done it differently” is a preference and should be labeled as one. Collapsing the two, which is the default, produces teams that cannot tell when they are being corrected and when they are being overruled.

The founder-practitioner tension

Many Venice businesses are built around a founder whose personal craft is the product. Growth requires other people to do that work, and the founder is usually the only person who believes it can be done to standard.

Resolving this is rarely about trust in the abstract. It is about defining what standard actually means concretely enough that someone else can hit it, which most founders have never had to articulate because they simply knew it.
