What this measures

Burnout is not the same as being tired or busy. The World Health Organization classifies it as an occupational phenomenon with three dimensions: exhaustion, mental distance or cynicism about the job, and reduced professional efficacy. The questions above map to those three.

That distinction matters because the version that affects senior people rarely looks like collapse. It looks like competence with the interest drained out of it, held together by discipline. People in that state keep performing, which is exactly why it goes unaddressed for years.

Reading your score

  • Low — workload is demanding but recoverable. Rest is still working.
  • Moderate — early signals present. Usually the point at which the recovery time you get stops matching the energy you spend. Most fixable here.
  • High — cynicism and exhaustion are established. Reducing hours alone will not resolve it, because the driver is usually control and meaning rather than volume.
  • Severe — treat as a health matter, not a productivity one. Speak to a doctor.

Why hours are the wrong thing to fix first

The research consistently finds burnout tracks more closely with autonomy, fairness, and whether the work feels meaningful than with raw hours. People sustain very demanding work when they control how it gets done and believe it matters. They burn out on moderate hours when neither is true.

This is why "take a holiday" so often fails. A week away treats exhaustion and leaves the cause intact, so the recovery lasts about a two weeks.

What actually helps

  • Reclaim one decision. Autonomy is the strongest protective factor. One area you fully control does more than a lighter overall load.
  • Name the thing you are dreading. Avoidance costs more energy than the task usually does.
  • Fix the recovery, not just the load. Whether your evenings and weekends actually restore anything matters as much as hours worked.
  • Address it before it is severe. Moderate burnout responds to changes you can make yourself. Severe generally does not.

Preventing burnout as a leader covers the structural side, and setting boundaries covers the part most leaders find hardest.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a medical or diagnostic test?

No. It is an educational self-assessment. It does not diagnose anything and is not a substitute for advice from a doctor or a licensed mental health professional. If your result is severe, or if you have symptoms affecting your health, speak to a clinician.

What is the difference between burnout and stress?

Stress involves too much pressure and usually still carries engagement. Burnout involves disengagement: exhaustion plus cynicism plus a sense that your work no longer makes a difference. Stress tends to resolve with rest; burnout generally does not.

Can you recover from burnout without leaving your job?

Often, yes, if the drivers are addressable within the role. Where the cause is structural — a manager who will not change, a role with responsibility but no authority — recovery usually requires the situation to change rather than the person.
