Coaching prices range from $100 to over $2,000 an hour, and the spread has less to do with quality than with who is paying. This is what each type of coaching costs in 2026, the five things that actually move the price, and how to compare two quotes that look nothing alike.

What each type of coaching costs

Coaching is not one market. A business coach working with a ten-person company and an executive coach working with a VP are priced differently because the buyer and the stakes are different. These are the US ranges per session, and what a full engagement usually comes to.

Why the same hour costs $150 or $1,500

  1. Credential. An ICF PCC has logged 500+ coaching hours and passed a recorded assessment. An ACC has 100. An uncredentialed coach may have neither, and the title is unregulated in every US state.
  2. Who signs the invoice. Coaching billed to a company costs more than identical work billed to an individual. Procurement, invoicing and account management are real overheads, and the market bears them.
  3. Independent or firm. A consultancy carries salespeople, account managers and a brand. An independent coach carries none of that. The coaching method is frequently the same.
  4. What is bundled. Assessments, 360 feedback and stakeholder interviews can add $1,000–$5,000 to an engagement. Ask what is included before comparing two quotes.
  5. Geography, less than you would think. Most coaching now runs over video, which has flattened regional pricing. A Los Angeles coach and a Denver coach at the same credential level charge within about 15% of each other.

Business coach cost, specifically

Business coaching sits at the lower end because the buyer is usually paying personally. Expect $150–$400 a session, or $2,000–$8,000 for a three to six month engagement. Group programmes run $200–$800 a month and are the common entry point for owners under roughly twenty staff.

Be careful with packages sold as licences or franchises. Some large business-coaching brands charge $1,500–$3,000 a month on twelve-month minimum terms, delivered by coaches following a script. That is a different product from an independent coach, and the price does not reflect greater experience.

Career coach cost

$100–$300 a session, and most people buy three to six rather than an ongoing engagement. Resume and interview work is often sold as a fixed package, $300–$1,500. If a career coach quotes executive-coaching rates, ask what makes the work different.

What free consultations actually tell you

Most credible coaches offer 20–30 minutes free. Use it as an assessment rather than a sales call: bring a real problem and notice whether the conversation sharpens it. A coach who spends the call describing their methodology is showing you what the engagement will be like. There is more on this in how to evaluate a coach before hiring.

Making the number defensible

Whoever pays will eventually ask what it returned. Agree two or three observable outcomes before the first session and price the problem they solve. The method is set out in executive coaching ROI, and there is a calculator that runs the arithmetic on your own numbers.

Frequently asked questions

What are typical business coach rates?

Independent business coach rates run $150 to $400 per session in the US, or $500 to $2,000 a month on retainer where the coach is available between sessions. Group programmes are cheaper at $200 to $800 monthly. Rates above $1,000 a session usually indicate a firm rather than an individual practitioner.

Are there executive coaching firms, and do they cost more?

Yes, and they typically charge $800 to $2,000 per session against $250 to $400 for an independent credentialed coach. The difference reflects brand, procurement and account management rather than method. Firms are worth it when you need many coaches across a leadership team; for one person, an independent coach usually delivers the same hour.

How much does a business coach cost?

Most business coaches charge $150 to $400 per session, or $2,000 to $8,000 for a three to six month engagement, because the buyer is usually the owner paying personally. Group programmes run $200 to $800 a month. Franchise-model brands charging $1,500-$3,000 monthly on annual minimums are a different product delivered to a script.

What are typical business coach fees and rates?

Per-session fees of $150-$400 are standard for an independent business coach in the United States. Retainers of $500-$2,000 a month are common where the coach is available between sessions. Ask whether assessments are included, since those add $1,000-$5,000 and make quotes hard to compare.

How much does a career coach cost?

Career coaches charge $100 to $300 per session, and most clients buy three to six sessions rather than an ongoing engagement. Resume and interview preparation is often sold as a fixed package between $300 and $1,500. Career coaching is priced below executive coaching because the individual pays rather than an employer.

How much does a leadership coach cost?

Leadership coaching runs $200 to $500 per session, or $3,000 to $10,000 for a six-month engagement, and is most often employer-funded. Novator Coaching charges $285 per session with the first thirty minutes free. Rates above $800 generally indicate a consultancy rather than an individual coach.

How much do coaches cost per hour?

Across all types, $100 to $500 per hour covers the great majority of independent coaches in the US. Below $100 usually means someone building their hours toward a credential. Above $800 usually means a firm, where you are also paying for brand, procurement and account management rather than a different method.

Is a more expensive coach better?

Not reliably. Price tracks credential level and who is being billed far more closely than it tracks results. An independent ICF PCC coach at $285 and a consultancy at $1,200 are frequently delivering the same hour. What predicts outcome is whether the leader chose the coaching and whether goals were agreed before it started.

Does insurance or an employer cover coaching?

Insurance does not, because coaching is not a clinical service. Employers frequently do, either through an L&D budget or a manager's discretionary spend. If your employer pays, agree in writing what they receive: attendance and progress against shared goals is reasonable, session content is not.
